My 5% Play - Trump Not to Sue Over South Park Episode
5% Will Trump Sue Over South Park Episode? - No at 94c (Ok to 97c)
Well well well. The guys behind South Park have gone and done it again. The première of the current season of South Park was not the first episode they've done on Trump but definitely pushed the envelope out when it comes to being provocative. With that, there is a new market on Polymarket as to whether or not Trump will sue South Park over this latest episode by the 31st of August this year. Resolution criteria list that a lawsuit must not merely be announced, it must be filed.
Why do I believe this is extremely unlikely to happen? Although Trump has filed an enormous amount of lawsuits, they do tend to be strategic. They either directly pertain to his businesses or political interests. This is why even the more frivolous looking lawsuits to the general public (like suing 60 Minutes over their selective editing of last year's Kamala Harris interview) do have a method to the madness.
Suing South Park would have no strategic payoff for Trump, if anything the opposite. It would not succeed as satire is protected speech and anyone remotely versed in law knows this. It would be out of line with his previous lawsuits and would only give ammunition to his political opponents.
What evidence do we have of what Trump thinks of the episode, if anything at all? It has been widely reported that White House Correspondent Taylor Rogers has issued a statement slamming South Park for the episode, although I have not been able to find evidence of such a statement being published.
We do however have a short clip of a reporter asking Trump about South Park and he responds in a manner much more consistent with his handling of this kind of personal attack - indifference. He says that he doesn't watch South Park and that was pretty much that. For these reasons I think a lawsuit is overwhelmingly unlikely.
